The California Bar
The California Bar is our first dual-ring barbell built specifically for functional fitness athletes. It has the nuances and sought after specifications of a top-quality 28MM weightlifting bar and is also durable enough to withstand daily use in other lifts and programs.
The California Bar is finished with Cerakote for a look, feel, and performance that is unparalleled in the fitness industry today. The bar shaft is made from precision ground alloy steel and the strength of the shaft is tested with every shipment of raw material to ensure we have a consistent 190,000 PSI tensile strength. This attention to detail also allows for excellent whip and long-term performance of our bars.
The bar sleeves are precision machined and each sleeve is coated with hard chrome for protection against dropping and impact. Sleeves rotate around high strength composite bushings used in aircraft and automotive industries for smooth rotation.
After many years of producing some of the finest Olympic barbells in the world, American Barbell is proud to introduce our latest innovation: Cerakote finished bars. Nothing ever produced rivals the corrosion and abrasion resistance of this finish. Cerakote is used by major firearm manufacturers around the world in some of the most abusive and corrosive environments. Corrosion salt spray testing has shown that this coating lasts as much as 70x longer than chrome and even stainless steel.
American Barbell's design team has been producing innovations in bar technology for more than 18 years, and this is one of our most exciting accomplishments. Every type of bar finish has its story, and we’ve determined that our California Bar is unrivaled.

I've had the 20kg California barbell for well over a year now, and I'm pleased with how well it's handled everything I've put it through. The knurling doesn't feel like its worn down in the slightest, and the collars rotate as well as when I first got the bar. The cerakote finish has suffered a very minor scratch on the shaft, exposing the steel underneath. However, I have yet to see any rust form, and regular maintenance keeps the bar looking good as new.
This bar is solid. The sleeves have far less side to side movement as compared to my Ohio bar. It sounds and feels SOLID when receiving cleans and snatches and the drop sounds different than all other bars I have used. It has become my go to bar for CrossFit. I am interested to see how it stands the test of time. Fine job American Barbell!!
Worth every penny and the packaging is perfect to ensure the bar receives no damage while shipping. Would definitely recommend and buy again
Overall I really like this bar but maybe QC is lacking from Covid related issuesas I received this in Jan 2021. The sleeve on one side of my bar makes a horribly loud metal zipper / ripping noise when loading or unloading plates. It’s clear that the one side was not polished smooth. This is normally not a huge issue unless you have a home gym like me and the sound echoes back into the house. This makes working out in the early morning and late evenings impossible. I asked AB if they would warranty it as it’s a defect in workmanship but they denied saying their policy for this type of issue is 6 days after receiving the item. They offered for me to send it back at my own expense just so they could quote me a price to fix it. It’s truly sad because everything else about this bar is great. See photos of the sleeve that was not brought to a smooth finish. I’m hoping some sand paper might help to smooth it out so I can at least bring down the volume of the noise.
Hey Freddy, So sorry this has been your experience so far. Please reach out to firstname.lastname@example.org so we can get this fixed.
I bought the California Bar and thus far, I love it. I was going to go with a Rogue bar, because if you don’t, do you even CrossFit?! But I am very glad I didn’t, the sounds of the California Bar hitting the ground from an overhead drop (not empty of course) sound so much more solid then the Rogue ones we use at our Box and there is ZERO rattle. It actually stays close for fast singles and doesn’t shoot to the side. The feel and spin on the Olympic Lifts just feel better (I do believe the bearings are the same on both bars?) and the grip is really nice, almost to the point that you don’t need to use as much chalk as you normally would. Chalk makes you stronger though, so I still use it. Highly impressed and my gymmates are pretty jealous. If you’re between the two bars or debating on getting one, pull the trigger on this bar, you won’t be disappointed!
